Who we are
Our local was organized decades ago and today represents thousands of members working for employers across the metro area. Members hold a wide range of jobs — in education, administration, recreation, health care, technical trades, cultural institutions, and municipal services — with the majority in the public sector.
We are affiliated with our national union and labour councils at the provincial and regional level. Together we bargain contracts, enforce workplace rights, and keep members connected through news, meetings, and democratic votes.

Our history
What began as lunch-room conversations among stewards became a certified bargaining unit — and eventually a local that now speaks for thousands of workers. Members were motivated by wage pressure, job security, inconsistent workplace rules, and the need for a fair process to stand up together.
Over the years we have bargained stronger contracts, built steward networks, and expanded representation across new worksites. Our activism helped win safer workplaces, fairer scheduling, and a member portal where officers and stewards actually run day-to-day union business.
How we serve members
Key services our local provides to members every day:
- Negotiate fair wages, benefits, and working conditions with employers
- Fight for safe and healthy workplaces — staffing, training, and enforcement
- Support members facing unfair treatment, harassment, or discipline
- Uphold every provision of the collective agreement
- Represent members’ interests to employers, governments, and the community
- Provide specialized support including job evaluation and legal representation when needed
Fair wages, safe working conditions, and a voice on the job — for every worker we represent.
— Our founding commitment
What we stand for
Simple principles. Everyday practice.
Union democracy
Our local is run by members. Officers and stewards are elected; members vote on contracts, priorities, and major decisions. Delegates are chosen for regional and national conventions — one member, one vote.
The power of unity
Dues fund bargaining, grievance representation, education, health and safety support, and a strike defence fund. Together we have real leverage to protect jobs today and build security for tomorrow.
